At Aurabox, we’ve spent a lot of time talking to imaging providers (both public and private) about their imaging systems and the way they interact with external users, and we’ve learnt a lot about the current state of the industry and it’s challenges. At the same time, we’re building advanced medical imaging interoperability services with a view to a future state where imaging is securely exchanged at scale. This is a future that is shared by many governments, who are combining policy and technical approaches to move the industry towards a more interoperable future.
In Australia, this is manifesting as the Sparked program, HealthConnect, and Share By Default legislation, and there is significantly more to come.
In this environment, it’s important to be able to benchmark your current state, as well as understand where you need to go. The Aurabox Maturity Model addresses this challenges by providing a structured, systematic approach designed to enhance medical imaging interoperability across institutions.
The Importance of the Aurabox Maturity Model
The Aurabox Maturity Model offers imaging providers a clear and strategic roadmap to transition from manual, isolated imaging processes to fully integrated, real-time imaging solutions. This structured framework helps organisations:

Key Capabilities Evaluated by the Aurabox Maturity Model
The model evaluates organisational maturity across five distinct stages: Foundation, Coordination, Collaboration, Integration, and Standardisation. Organisations in the first two tiers are likely to handling all or many imaging transactions manually, or sending users to web portals like Inteleviewer. Unfortunately, we know that these processes are extremely high friction for clinicians and for imaging providers.
The model looks at these stages across several critical capabilities. These capabilities provide not only an evaluation mechanism, but a lightweight roadmap to full interoperability.
The two core capabilities are Discovery and Retrieval. Discovery is the ability of external users and systems to locate imaging that your organisation holds, while Retrieval is their ability to obtain that imaging. In both cases systems that allow for automatic, compliance-based discovery and retrieval via APIs (and without manual intervention) score more highly than those that require manual interventions (such as sharing a link, pushing from one PACS to another, or searching within a portal).
The remaining capabilities support these two core capabilities and represent the bulk of an organisations needs around making their imaging obtainable. This includes Sharing, Consent Management, Identity Verification, Patient Access, and Compliance.
